Practical notes on food that looks right in the frame and at the table.

About

Plate & Lens is a small independent editorial project about the visual side of dining, edited by Tomas Ekwall. We publish practical notes on plating and on photographing dishes or drinks for menus, boards and the guest's own camera.

We care about the gap between an appealing picture and an enjoyable plate. A stack has to survive being carried, and a beautiful sauce still needs to reach the food. We look closely at those ordinary tensions because appearance belongs to the experience of eating.

We work through specific choices using clearly described examples and procedural explanations. Our notes distinguish a visual preference from a practical constraint, with reference links where a definition helps. We treat photographs as records of what can be served and keep the food at the table as our measure.
